DAY 1
All the things you need to know about this course....
PART A:
1) My Website will have any important updates, dates, and assignments. Please make sure you have this site on your phones or somewhere you can access it regularly. You should be checking it at least once per week.
IMHcoop.weebly.com
2) Introduction to co-op course.
-WHAT IS CO-OP? Simply put, co-op offer students experiential learning in a job placement. The idea is to learn how to apply your learning from school, volunteer work, personal experiences, and part-time jobs to the work place. You will be surprised at how many skills you already have to bring to a job. You compliment this learning and add to it by gaining new skills and experience working with champion mentors in the work place.
-WHAT ARE INTEGRATION DAYS? Each month you will come to the classroom for two periods instead of going to work. This gives all of us a chance to reconnect, share our co-op experience, and complete some assignments.
-HOW CAN I CONTACT MY TEACHER? You can contact me by email at: [email protected], or by phone at
613-237-4034 or find out what's going on by visiting my website regularly (see top of page).
3) How am I marked in this class?
-HOURS: you need to complete enough hours in the workplace to demonstrate your learning. It is the same as being in class. The typical week of work for you will be approximately 15 hours per week. This adds up to approximately 220 hours over a semester.
-Hour Republic: The only way I know how many hours you have is for you to log them EVERY week on Hour Republic. The hours are logged and get sent to your employer to review them and approve them. I am able to see all hours that are approved or waiting approval or rejected.
-ASSIGNMENTS: pre-placement and integration assignments will be given during these days. They are assignments that will assist you in your learning and will allow you to demonstrate learning on the job to me.
-EMPLOYER EVALUATIONS: employer evaluations (initiative, attendance, being on time, following instructions, helpfulness, team work, independent work, ability to handle constructive criticism, desire to learn) are critical to both you as a student and me as a teacher. I will speak to employers regularly to find out how you are doing, what you are learning, and things you can improve upon.
-MY TEACHER EVALUATION: This is based on in class work, my visits to your work place where you demonstrate your learning to me, your CPT at the end of the semester, your ability to follow instructions (signing out each day, phoning if you are absent, asking questions for clarification, etc)
-CPT: You will have a CPT but no exam in this course.
4) Cue Cards - each student will be ask to fill out a cue card with information. This is important to do because I need to be able to contact you when I don't have access to my computer or when I'm out in the field on visits. Please fill out the following information on cue cards provided.
-Your full name
-The name of your employer/business ie Assumption School You can find this information online or on your interview information page I will provide for you.
-Phone number of employer
-Address of employer
-Name of supervisor
-Your cell phone number
PART B:
1) EMPLOYER FOLDER: We will go through your EMPLOYER FOLDER together. Everything you need to have for your job interview is in this employer folder. The employer can keep this folder. The only thing you need to bring back is your signed Work Education Agreement and your OYAP form 1 if you are in the trades. Below is a list of all the items in your employer folder including your Work Education Agreement, various forms for your employer to keep, you resume, and any certifications you have.
-When is my interview? Your interview is usually within one week of us meeting together.
-Where is my interview? I will provide the name and address of your job placement. It is your responsibility to make sure you know how to get there. Check transportation schedules, go by before the interview to make sure you know where it is, or look at google maps
-What do I wear to my interview? Dress professionally. For most jobs, wearing your cleanest and newest school uniform will work. You can also wear dress clothes such as dress pants, collared shirts, nice sweater. Some jobs such as mechanics or construction work require safety boots and hard hats. You can obviously wear old clothes to do this kind of job as you will get dirty.
-What questions do I ask at my interview? Ask any question that you are worried about or not sure about. For example, you may want to ask what the dress code is at the work place. You may want to ask any health and safety concerns you may have. You may want to ask who you contact if you are going to be away. Make sure you get the supervisors phone number and email during this interview. You will need both for Hour Republic and for days you may be away from work.
WORK EDUCATION AGREEMENT
-What is it? The Work Education Agreement or WEA is an extremely important legal document that must be signed by you, your parents, your teacher and your supervisor before you can legally work at the job placement. It is your insurance policy to work. Should you get hurt in any way, the WEA is the legal insurance policy that covers both you and the employer as you are insured through the Ministry of Education. You cannot start your job until this agreementis signed and returned to me.
-What needs to be done at interview? One of the most important things you will do at your interview is hopefully get your Work Education Agreement (WEA) signed by your employer. The best practice is for you, and your parents to sign it immediately (before your interiew) and then get your employer to sign it at the interview provided that you get the job. Then you return it to me first thing the next day. I will sign it and then you can begin your job placement.
OYAP FORM 1
-What is it? The OYAP form 1 is for those students who are registered in OYAP (jobs within the recognized trades). If you are going to be working at a school, as a mechanic, as a hairstylist, as a cook, as a electrician etc...you will be asked to have this signed by both you and your parents and returned to me with the WEA. Your employer does not need to sign this form.
-What needs to be done at interview? At the end of your interview, if you get the job, you will ask your employer any questions you may have, what time and day they expect your to go in for your first day (usually the next day or the start of a new week) and you need them to sign your Work Education Agreement (WEA).
EMPLOYER FACT SHEETS
-permission to travel off site form: this only needs to be signed if you are going to be going off site and travelling with your employer
-employer fact sheet for Hour Republic - this is for your employer to read to understand how we will be keeping track of your hours
-insurance information - this is for your employer to keep so he/she understands how you are insured
-calendar for the term - I have made up a calendar for the term that lists PD days, Vacation days, integration school days, and any other important events for the semester. Your employer will be given one and so will you. A best practice is for you to tape your calendar to the inside of your locker so you can see important dates at a glance.
-Student Information to Travel Off Site form: if a student is required to be a passenger in a company vehicle this form must be signed
PART C:
