Update for Week May 11-15 Hi everyone and welcome to update #8. I hope you are all keeping well. Thank you for all your hard work in keeping up with the assignments. I hope you enjoyed the video and meditation from last week. On Friday you received a base mark for work up to March 13th. This mark can change based on all the hard work you are now doing. Keep up the great work ethic and learning.
This week I’m giving you an assignment that is not due until Sunday May 24th (2 weeks). It involves a little more work and may take you additional time to complete. Of course if you complete it this week please send it to me. I like to mark in smaller batches whenever possible instead of getting an onslaught of assignments the day they are due :) As usual, if you have any questions or need any help, feel free to email me.
This assignment is different for the grade 11s and the grade 12s. Make sure you read carefully to make sure you are doing the assignment for your grade.
GRADE 11s Next year (grade 12) is a very important year for you. This is the year where you leave your mark on Immaculata. It is the year that what you do and how you do it can make a big difference in your life. Colleges and Universities are looking not only at your marks but also your community and volunteer activities. It’s also a chance to make some great lasting memories in your final year. It is a very good idea to know where you are going, what you are planning, and what you are good at before you enter into this important year. This assignment is geared towards helping you plan your grade 12 year and beyond.
Part 1: What is your pathway? Describe your pathway beyond grade 12. Are you thinking about going to college? Are you thinking of going to University? Are you planning to go straight into the world of work? Where do you see yourself a year from now? What school or workplace will you be getting ready to go to? To help you answer these questions, consider what you are good at. What do you like? What do you excel at academically? What do you enjoy taking in school? What are your marks like? How hard are you willing to work to achieve your goals? These are important considerations in making the right choice for your future.
Part 2: How am I going to achieve this goal? What courses are you taking next year? (in grade 12) What did you sign up for and if you haven’t signed up for your courses yet then what do you plan to take? Why are you taking these courses? Which ones do you feel will be the most helpful to you for your future pathway and why?
Part 3: Google search one of the following two choices:
The specific career choice you are interested in (for example: teacher, automotive technician, web developer) OR
A specific school you are interested in attending after grade 12 (Algonquin, George Brown College, Carleton University, Waterloo :)) etc...pick something.
Once you’ve selected your career choice or your school choice research the following and write a brief description of your career or the course you are interested in taking. For example: I want to go to the University of Waterloo and take their co-op computer science course. Describe the course. Look it up on the Waterloo website. What kind of marks do you need? What high school courses do you need to take? What is the course about? OR I want to be a web developer. What do you need to become a web developer? What kind of education do you need? What kind of previous experience do you need? Do you need college or university? Find a job description that identifies what you need to do to become a web developer?
Part 4: What are some volunteer activities (either community service hour activities or other volunteer activities you’re involved in) or extracurricular activities you have done while in high school? Describe what you will be doing in grade 12 for your volunteer hours if not completed, and any activities, sports, or clubs you are going to be involved in at school or outside of school.
GRADE 12s This year has been a crazy one for you folks. This is not exactly the way you planned your grade 12 year. If nothing else it will be memorable and a good story to tell 10 years from now. Luckily, you have probably already selected your college or university or work pathway by now. You have put in 4 years of high school work and learning and participated in volunteer and extracurricular activities that have shaped you and have led you to this moment of choice in your life.
Part 1: If you are going to college or university next year, where are you planning to go and what program are you planning to take? Describe the program that you are going into. This means going to the school’s website and writing a description of your chosen program(s). If you are taking a year off and plan on working, what work are you planning to do and how are you planning to get this job? Describe the work you will be doing and where you hope to work. Why are you interested in this work?
Part 2: What courses have you taken in school this year (grade 12) that you feel will assist you in college, university or the world of work? Why do you feel this way? What have you learned that will help you in the future?
Part 3: List the volunteer activities, extracurricular activities or outside clubs you have been involved in while in high school. How will these activities help you with your future plans or how have they helped you personally? If you haven’t been involved or completed your volunteer hours, what do you hope to become involved with in the future and why?
Part 4: Looking ahead, where do you see yourself in 5 years? Will you be done college or university and what degree will you have? Will you be working and where will that be? What kind of job are you hoping to have in the future? I understand that this is largely speculative and that you don’t know for certain how you will do in school or at work, if you will like the program or the work and will change part way through, or if you will even have a job waiting right out of school. However, I want you to tell me your best guess based on decisions you’ve already made and what you know to be true for this coming September.
